Adult Transition Program (ATP)

The Fullerton Joint Union High School District’s Adult Transition Program (ATP) serves young adult students with disabilities (ages 18–22) who have completed high school under an Alternate Diploma pathway or a Certificate of Completion. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), eligible students continue receiving specialized transition instruction and support until age 22.

The mission of FJUHSD’s Adult Transition Program is to empower students and their families by facilitating a smooth transition from high school into meaningful, independent adult life. ATP educators collaborate closely with local community partners, vocational programs, and state agencies to prepare students to become active, contributing members of their communities.

    ATP provides comprehensive instruction and hands-on experience across five essential skill domains:

    • Functional Academics
      Practical application of academic skills (e.g., money management, telling time, reading functional signage, and college access) taught and reinforced in both classroom and real-world community environments.
    • Vocational Skills
      Instruction in work-readiness, job seeking, and job performance. Students gain hands-on work experience through campus-based and community-based sites to foster competitive integrated employment and independence.
    • Community Access & Mobility
      Training focused on navigating local community environments independently, utilizing public transportation, practicing personal safety, and applying appropriate social communication skills.
    • Recreation & Leisure
      Opportunities for students to explore, choose, and participate in personally satisfying, constructive leisure activities across home, school, and community settings.
    • Independent Living Skills
      Targeted training in daily living tasks, including meal planning and food preparation, personal hygiene, laundry, household management, family/social relationships, and personal wellness.

  • Adult Program

    • CHOICESS: A non-profit agency dedicated to supporting individuals with developmental disabilities to live in their own homes, work in jobs of their choice, and build meaningful community connections.
    • ASPIRE: Offers a variety of classes in the visual and performing arts, pre-vocational skills, and life enrichment to explore undiscovered talents.
    • North Orange Continuing Education (NOCE): Offers adult education courses, post-secondary transition guidance, and career pathways.
    • Creative Identity: A music and expressional arts day program.

    Self Advocacy

    • Disability Rights California: Advocacy tools and legal resources, including information on self-advocacy, self-esteem, and anti-bullying.

    Post-Secondary & Independent Living Programs

    • Taft College Transition to Independent Living (TIL): A comprehensive residential post-secondary program for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
